How can I help?

One question we are often asked is – How can I help Dominica? Hopefully this blog will answer that question and give some ideas about how you can also help Dominica, no matter where you live.

The Help for Dominica charity project is a very small one, co ordinated by Brenda and Dominique in the UK and Sandra in Dominica.

Although we are small, we are known for making sure that all our donated items get directly to where they are most needed. We will give you some ideas here about how you can help Dominica by assisting Sandra, also how you can assist Brenda & Dominique, and how you can help the project overall.

Help Dominica – Brenda & Dominique

In the UK we collect many donations from people and businesses who want to send items to assist. Often these items need to be collected if they are larger, and we are always in need of people to volunteer to drive and collect these and deliver to one of our drop off points.

For example, we have recently been offered a large quantity of wood for the next container, enough to fill a Luton box van, but we need a driver to collect this from Ashford and take to Milton Keynes. We may possibly have mattresses to be collected from Birmingham too. It’s a shame that sometimes we have had to say no to larger items as there has been no one available to collect for us.

Sometimes there are smaller items that will fit into a car boot, so if you can offer you assistance please contact us through the contact form and leave your details and what areas you would be prepared to drive to. We would like to have a list of possible volunteers so that we can call on people when needed. Funds are limited but we will reimburse your fuel costs for this.

Another way to help Dominica is to order items online to be sent directly to us, the address to use is Help for Dominica, c/o Brenda Vidal, 9 Sea View Terrace, Margate, CT9 5BJ. Our main project is Arts and Crafts for schools, but we also urgently need solar lights and chargers, reusable sanitary pads and reusable nappies.

We also have a few drop off points, in Margate, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Northampton and London but you will need to contact us to make arrangements first.

When the container is ready to load, we are always in need of volunteers to assist with that, and with packing boxes in the week leading up to it. The next container will go from Milton Keynes, so if you would like to be notified of the dates please contact us and we will let you know.

Help Dominica – Sandra

In Dominica once the container arrives, there is always a need of volunteers to help Sandra to unload it, and transport the contents to where they need to go. Initially most go to a safe storage from where she will sort things out for distribution. If you live in Dominica and are able to assist, please either contact Sandra directly or through the contact form on here and let us have your name, area you live, and contact details.

Sandra is in complete control of distribution, so it will always be at her discretion where and how this takes place, but we also would like to be able to spread out into other areas If you are willing to assist her with distribution please let us know. We are always keen to make sure items go where they are intended, and we support this with photos taken and posted on our Facebook page.

Help Dominica – by raising funds

This is vital to our project as shipping costs are high, as well as other incidental costs.

An easy way to raise funds at NO COST to you, is to use our easyfunding link when you shop online. Many retailers are joined up to the scheme, including Amazon, ebay,, in fact everything from grocery shopping to travel and holidays! Use our link to make purchases, and the retailer will make a donation to our charity project.

There is also an app to download, which will automatically show you if a retailer or site is in the scheme and any purchase you make will add to our funds. If you haven’t already joined up to this, please consider doing so as it will help us immensely.

Crowdfunders are also a way we use, and if you check the donate button on our website it will always link you to our latest one where you can make a donation.

Many individuals, schools and other organisations have done fundraisers for us, and this is something we also appreciate. Cheques made payable to Help for Dominica can be sent to the address in Margate shown above, or contact us for banking details.

Help Dominica – in general

One thing we appreciate very much is seeing your comments and likes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It also helps us if you share some of our posts, and our website, so that others can get involved too. This is a way to help Dominica without any cost to yourself, and it really does make a difference. We are also happy for any relevant guest blogs for the website, if you would like to contribute one please let us know!

Anything you can do to help Dominica no matter how small is always welcome, so please get in touch if you would like more information.

Most of all, Sandra, Brenda and Dominique would like to thank everyone who supports Help for Dominica, we are most grateful to you all.
